The Museum-reserve “Tsaritsyno” opened a large exposition of the English caricature of the eighteenth — first third of the XIX century. Arzamas is publishing extracts from its books curator Basil assumption that explains how were organized the cartoons of the time.

About half of the exhibits are the works of Gillray James (1757-1815), who is often called the main British cartoonist and most influential satirical schedule of all time.

James Which was born in the family of a Scottish military man, a war veteran, a member of the Moravian religious brotherhood, grim ascetic Protestant sects. Retired Gilray father served as a Sexton to the Moravian cemetery. The Moravian brethren preached the renunciation of earthly goods and pleasures, their children have forbidden any toys. All four brothers and sisters Gilray did not live to adult age, and one of the brothers dying eight-year-old urged death as a deliverance from earthly life. Educated in a closed Moravian Academy, Which is 14 years received an assistant engraver, specializing in the creation of calligraphic signatures, but, finding this occupation is dull, throw it all away and for some time traveled the country with a troupe of actors. Finally, at the age of 22 years, he managed to enter the Royal Academy of arts, where he studied the art of engraving by the best craftsmen of the era. At the same time, Which was to create the first cartoons. Initially, this activity was for him obviously a side source of income. Low birth Gilray closed path in the academic art career reproduction of the engraver is also not specified. Which is dabbled in the role of a historical painter, he even managed to present their works to the court of the king, but to gain a foothold in the academic art of he was not destined.

But Which was able to establish himself as a figure independent of the official hierarchy, but they are not less influential. Audience Gilray were people of “high rank, good taste, and education.” Only they could fully perceive and appreciate its compound leaves, full of inscriptions in ancient languages, quotations from the works of art and literature, multi-layered allegories, allusions to the political and social life of London society. The sophistication of the content match the sophistication of performance — many of the sheets are made in a complex mixed technique.

Cartoons Gilroy not only parodied the individual paintings and entire scenic course but, in turn, become a source of inspiration for the official artists. Goya, David, Delacroix are just a few of the masters, in one way or another influenced by Gilray.

All of the currents of English art of the turn of the century most Gilray more than anything was close to romanticism — its concentration on the dark side of life, the craving for the horrible and ugly in well with the nature of the cartoons. Romantic images and clichés — images of supernatural phenomena, nightmares, prophecies of Apocalypse and formed the basis of a caricature of phantasmagoria Gilray.

Exclusion from high art, the precarious financial situation, especially education left a mark on the psyche of the artist: in his works, there is a craving for violence and suppressed sexual feeling. This gave rise to the cartoonist’s talented, passionate, cynical, angry, resourceful, and extremely productive — has not been equal. Which was an introvert, all the complexes and phobias were driven deep into — even in the Zenith of his fame he was not posing as a rejected genius and in no way outwardly showed no artistic extravagance. He has not been in society and rarely left his home. He lived in the same house, which housed the caricature shop Hannah Humphrey, where he printed, painted and sold his leaves. Hannah lived right there with him. About their relationship were all sorts of rumors, but apparently, it replaced his mother than his wife: she was eleven years his senior.

Contemporaries were struck by the ordinariness of his appearance and manners: “It gives the impression of such everyday simplicity, such a direct, unpretentious personality that nobody could have guessed in this dry man with glasses great artist”. Another witness said, “From year to year, he from time to time was Smoking a pipe in the Bell, “Coal” or “Carriage and horses” and although drinking companions, whom he met on these vulgar rendezvous, he knew that he was the Which that produced those funny prints… he never wanted… to become king… and he had no special reverence”.

William Makepeace Thackeray, a big fan of cartoons, and the cartoonist wrote about Gilrae: “Talented artist… was far from society that he ridiculed and entertained. Which is observed politicians when they passed his shop on my way to St. James street, or on the sidelines of the house of Commons. His Studio was located somewhere in the attic, his resting place was, where he and his company spent a lot of time, puffing at his pipe and spitting on the floor strewn with sawdust. It is impossible to portray a society that does not know”. Although the quote of a contemporary, the above seems to confirm the findings of the Thackeray, works of Gillray, as well as some facts of his biography indicate that everything was different. Cartoons Gilroy demonstrate not only a comprehensive education of their author but also his familiarity with such details of the political, artistic and social life which were known only to the initiated. He was not a frequenter of the salons and political clubs, but around him, there were people of all ranks. Police looking for friendship, aristocrats were eager to have etched a caricature in their sketch, scientists have suggested ideas for new sheets. Within their shop, Which is a dry man with glasses, was in the center of London in the world.

In the end, passion eaten Gilray inside and coming out in a grotesque phantasmagoria ruined him. With age Which began to lose vision, and then to experience bouts of insanity, during one of which tried to commit suicide by jumping from the window of a caricature shop Humphrey. In 1811, he finally lost his mind and lived his remaining four years in charge have not left it to Hannah.

Prints Gilray overcome the laws of the genre and the comic frame, towering to a synthesis of artistic images. He outlined this paradoxical phenomenon as “caricatura-sublime” — “the sublime caricature”. Largely because of Gillray caricature was perceived in Europe as a full-fledged art, who had their own collectors, critics, and biographers.

Which was a versatile cartoonist? He was subject to all the genres of satire and caricature techniques. On the example of his work can clearly show how comprehensive was an English satirical graphics from the Golden age. Caricature is not only laughing — she castigated the voices and sang of heroes, guarding public morality, and challenged the foundations, formulated a national idea and created the image of the enemy, served as a political propaganda and unite the nation in the face of external threats. There was something caustic, good-natured, enthusiastic, cynical.

Independent and not knowing prohibitions caricature of England became the universal language, a way of perceiving the world. She played the role of the counterculture, the questioning of all foundations of existence. It committed daily revolution — political, moral, aesthetic. It’s recognized leader was James Which is.

The paint layer to peel off, the canvas torn, the product is suffering from moisture or other extreme conditions. Such damage threatens to further fracture and should be strengthened. To do this, use delicate materials, such as not too strong adhesives. One of the main causes of damage is changes in temperature and humidity. Wood stored in water, the textile is in the earth, but their retrieval and subsequent oxygen shock can lead to irreparable damage. But to place the thing in a special hermetic chamber is not an option since it will be impossible to take out from there: the contact with oxygen is detrimental. There is mechanical damage: breaks, the streaks of water, exposed to extreme conditions, falls, etc.

How to restore what has been lost

To restore the lost items is not always possible, however, in some cases, for example in the restoration of ceramics, the details are able to fill direct analogies.

Restoration uses the method of symmetry, for example, if you lost one of the two handles cases, or inertia when the fragment can be filled, prolonging its outline. There are more complicated ways to compensate. The ceramic statuette is the work of “don Quixote and Sancho Panza” from the Museum “tsarina” received in restoration center named after broken down, without the spear and the horse’s tail. A direct analogy to the lost fragments could not be found: the statue is in many museums, but in all instances also repulsed tail. Through the Museum of the Konakovo faience factory was able to find a master who worked with forms Gurevich, and makes a shape to fill the tail.

Why you need tinted

The detail lost without a trace, do not think ever — restore won’t finish the pattern on the fabric or the eyes on the face of the icon. As a rule, those of the damage, where “author” was not kept replenished conditionally — that is, to the author’s layer and restoration could be distinguished with the naked eye. One of the most common ways such a conditional replenishment is practiced in almost all types of restoration — retouching. This method, described by the Russian restorers in the mid-nineteenth century, allows you to give the work a holistic view while retaining the traces of loss and damage and avoiding counterfeits of the original. The loss is covered by a translucent paint, similar in color with the author. The tinted sections must be different from the copyright layer materials and strength of tone.

On icons and frescoes in the loss of soil visible — light gesso or plaster. These white spots interfere with the integral perception and tinted them with watercolors semitone lighter environmental painting. Toning is intentionally given a mechanical, not a scenic view: a swab is placed under strict rules, limiting its direction, shape, and length. Tint layer copyright is strictly prohibited.

In ceramics complemented by tinted fragments, and textiles — a new basis on which stand the ancient embroidery. Clothes strengthened by specially sewn sheer fabric — gas. Transparent gas is also filled in the gaps: it tinted to the color of the surrounding tissue, and instead of a hole in the fabric appears transparent window through which is seen the wrong side of the subject.

How to choose materials

The restorative material must meet a few basic requirements: stability (the material does not change the structure and properties under influence of temperature or moisture, and not subject), reversibility (if necessary, the material can be removed, and it will not interfere with the re-restoration), durability (material will not change its properties for at least the next 50 years). New materials developed in special laboratories tested for these properties in the cells of aging. Often on the instructions of workshop material tailored to the specific needs of the monument.

Synthetic materials are made especially in the laboratories and enterprises. However, there are a very simple and effective formulation that can be prepared at home. For example, yolk emulsion, forming the paint layer of the murals, made from egg yolk, water, and alcohol.

Sometimes the material used by generations of restorers deserved that ban. So, at some point it became clear that casein glue creates a dense crust, which, when cracking pulls the paint layer and breaks it, so now to strengthen them, painting is prohibited.

How to keep a monument

After completing all work, the restorer continues to observe the monument, give guidance on storage, to prevent any improper interference, to monitor compliance with temperature and humidity (this is one of the main ways to avoid a new natural damage). After the delivery of the work of the restorer is not removed, the responsibility for the monument is still the patient, whose safety depends on the interaction of the restorer with all those involved in the life of the product.

Why you need a restoration

The main task of modern scientific restoration is to halt the destruction, study, and preserve the monument, to prolong his life and provide an opportunity for further research, art criticism, and history. These principles were laid in the nineteenth century when the idea of the necessity of preserving and studying the ancient times. The beginning of this process can be considered the act of the sculptor Canova, who refused to fill in the lost fragments of the Parthenon sculptures.

The former first part of archaeology, restoration gradually became a separate industry. In the nineteenth century, a clear division between the restoration, renovations, repair and restoration was not. Now the renovations and repair of unacceptable work with the sites, although commercial restoration often uses these methods to improve the view of the monument before reselling or exhibiting in a private collection. The difference between restoration and recovery is well illustrated by the temple of Christ the Savior, blown up although the temple was restored by the current forms, in fact, it is built anew.

Why the restorer almost like the doctor

Restores the doctors. They also wear white coats and use medical instruments — scalpels, syringes, compresses, cotton swabs. And the main principle is the same: do no harm. The monument is a fragile organism with centuries-old historical accretions, so before to intervene in its structure, it is necessary to determine the necessity of such interference. First, you need to make the correct diagnosis, i.e. to understand the causes of the destruction. It is, therefore, important to conduct a survey and make “history” — to describe the current state of the monument, laboratory, and archival research. The results of studies performed kind of the doctors and restoration Council, which is attended by historians, art historians, Museum curators and restorers of different profiles. Only when the program of works approved by Council can begin the restoration.

More accurately determine the condition of the monument allows physicochemical studies. The radiograph shows the internal structure of the work, voids, cracks, staples; shooting in ultraviolet rays needed for the assessment of surface — visible record, tinting, lacquers; shooting in the infrared allows us to see the different layers of the painting and the preparatory drawing.

Why should the restorer’s diary

In the cycle of restoration works several steps: first is cleaning, opening and strengthening, and then with the help of retouching and restoration of lost work result in the exhibition. Throughout the cycle, restorer writes a diary, in which then make the passport works, or report. In General, various documentation is an integral part of the restoration, because the restorer is not a free artist and researcher.

Scientific restoration sees in the monument is not only a work of art but a historical document. Therefore, even if the original layer is revealed completely without saving any of the later records, it is important to record all stages of existence of the monument. This is done through description, photographs and diagrams cartograms.

If you see the icon or picture of small squares, different in texture and color from the original painting, don’t think the restorers have neglected to clear the piece: this is a control plot or the so-called control print. It left a thin strip of each layer layer to keep the evidence of different stages of existence of the work. Sometimes after work and remove friendlies — they can just take a picture.

How to uncover the “author”

In the author’s monument to allocate layer — conservators call it “author” — and all subsequent layers (renovations, entry, dirty). The frescoes appears the soot from the candles, efflorescence; the icons will darken the varnish on the paintings of Polish; recovered from burial archaeological textiles and is covered with earth; the painting is affected by the fungus. But it is not only in the surface contamination. Simultaneously with the appearance of iconography originated the practice of painting renovations. To update the icon, as if it wrote again on the ancient layer, sometimes observing the iconography (i.e. keeping the composition and attributes of the characters), but changing the style in accordance with fashion or beliefs about ancient times. Often on top of the old image and completely re-wrote another Saint or another story — this practice was quite normal and was seen as an upgrade of the Shrine. In addition, the restorations often the materials that were harming the monument: one hundred years ago, a monumental painting could cover with wax as a protective layer, not knowing that the wax creates conditions for the moisture delay. One of the main objectives of the restorer is to reveal the original painting, that is, to remove the later layers.

What to delete and what not

Removed traces of domestic chunxi and writing, but saved the brass staples as an example of historical restoration.

But a late entry represents a historical value. To remove it or not depends on the degree of preservation of the aesthetic qualities of the “author” and later records. Ideally, it is better to save all the layers that are not always possible. However, sometimes painting can be stratified and moved to a new Foundation. In the Church of the Saviour Euphrosyne monastery almost completely preserved painting of the XII century was covered with several layers, including an oil painting of the XIX century. But these records lucky: the restorers were able to remove them, bringing the whole composition an area of a few square meters on a new basis. In the temple now you can see the ancient frescoes, and Museum — paintings of the XIX century, taken from the walls.

The basis of the mold and the embroidery is transformed into a bundle of threads. If you save all the seams and connections on the remaining stitches from the crease to restore order embroidery.

Gentile da Fabriano. “Adoration of the Magi”

The Magi who came to worship Christ, are often depicted together with the shepherds. But their journey was longer: they came from a far country, and on the way visited in Jerusalem by king Herod. It was believed that between Christmas and the arrival of the Magi some time has passed and the gifts they brought not to the manager. Matthew writes that they went to a house in which, apparently, moved Joseph and Mary.

The Magi were associated with the East, where they came from. In early depictions, the Magi often arrive on camels and wearing Phrygian caps that marked them as strangers. Later tradition attributed them names — Caspar, Melchior, and Balthazar — and the Royal lineage and their connection with the East were to indicate the luxury and extravagance of their costumes.

Especially this subject was popular in Florence in the XIV–XV centuries, wherein 1370‑ies there was an organization called the Compagnia di magi (“Magi Society”). Like the brotherhood, organized by the laity, existed in the Middle ages and engaged in charity. In Renaissance Italy, their role in urban life was great, management were sufficiently large financial resources, trade places on hospitals, assistance to the less successful members of the fraternity, the construction of new buildings. “The society of the Magi” has become one of the most influential Florentine brotherhoods, and among the participants were members of the Medici family. Meeting of the brotherhood was held in the convent of San Marco. The main objective of the society was the organization of the processions in the feast of the Epiphany (the day the Catholic Church celebrates the adoration of the Magi). At first, the procession resembled a medieval mystery, to the XV century, they increasingly began to resemble the ceremonial parades.

Rich Florentine family ordered the adoration of the Magi such artists as fra Filippo Lippi, fra Angelico, Botticelli, and others. Such order is demonstrated to others the welfare of the family, and at the same time justified his paintings and paintings was presented to the Church or placed in the family chapel. As the Magi, the customers were rich and just gave away part of his fortune to God. Gentile da Fabriano — the author of one of the most expensive “Worship of the Magi”, which was written by order of the banker Palla Strozzi, the richest man in Florence. The Strozzi you can see in the picture in the red turban, with a Falcon in his hand, behind one of the Magi.

The decorative quality of this picture, many small details, flowers and beasts, the procession of horsemen, from castle to castle, graceful posture standing behind Mary’s ladies in which it is difficult to know the midwives, are reminiscent of the gradually receding into the past of chivalrous courtly culture of the late middle Ages.

Georges de Latour. The adoration of the shepherds

Be the first to worship Jesus the shepherds came. To portray commoners, artists didn’t need to turn to the images of the past: the viewer immediately knew who was meant. The ordinary peasants and we see Georges de Latour. Familiar to him daily is not only reflected in the appearance of shepherds but in the plot. The shepherds bring the baby their gifts — flute, shepherd’s crook pie.

About these gifts, so different from luxurious gifts of the Magi, de Latour, likely knew of French Christmas music. There is about the shepherds going to see Jesus, list the gifts they bring him: lamb, flute, a glass of milk, and so on. This simple plot is combined with rapt, solemn yet gentle mood, which de Latour creates, using a restrained, austere composition, lighting, the scene is quiet, but the bright light of a single candle.

Paul Gauguin. “Te tamari no at” (“Christmas”)

In the second half of the nineteenth century, religious themes appear in art is relatively rare. Artists of the time are more interested in the surrounding reality. To historical scenes, images of myths, legends, and images of Scripture addressed only academic artists, to revive classical ideals, and the pre-Raphaelites, on the contrary, sought to return to painting. The Impressionists and post-Impressionists such stories took a little. In this sense, Paul Gauguin — an exception. In the unprepossessing hut tired Maria is resting on the bed, half-turned to the baby lying in the hands of midwives. Barely noticeable halos and the name of the picture is the only reference to the story that separates it from ordinary village life. But Christmas remains Christmas, regardless of the place of action, whether in Bethlehem, Tahiti or village in Brittany (this Christmas Gauguin began painting in 1894 and was finished in Tahiti).

The familiar donkey and the ox Gauguin replace standing in the corner by the cows. The unity of the painting, the presence of the divine in everything is the equivalent of the artist that “God is neither a scientist nor logic, he belongs to the poets, the field of dreams, it is a symbol of Beauty and Beauty itself”.

How at different times looked like the main characters of this story, which sources quoted the artists that influenced the choice of items and how different people at different times saw one and the same event: we explain on the example of six works.

Christmas is one of the most popular themes of European painting, changing along with it. Medieval paintings of artists retell in detail to illiterate parishioners the stories from the Scriptures. To the XV century, the focus shifts to Mary, the baby, and the accomplished miracle. Many symbolic details help unravel the author’s intent. In the painting of the XVII century the main — light and light effects: a cave or a shed are depicted in the twilight, while the figures gathered around the manger stand in the light. In a later era, artists are less interested in a traditional religious story. They depart from tradition and paint your own image of Christmas.

Mosaics of the Cappella Palatina in Palermo

When the Roman Emperor Augustus declared a census of the population, its residents went to the city where they were born. Among them were Joseph and Mary. They went to Bethlehem, but the hotel was not, so had to spend the night in a room for livestock. There Jesus was born. Mary swaddled the infant and laid in a manger. At this time, the angels appeared to the shepherds announcing to them the birth of the Son of God, and the star showed the Magi the way to the manager of the King of Judah. So briefly describe the Christmas evangelists Matthew and Luke. But in early Christian and medieval images of the Nativity characters, of which the gospel says nothing. This two midwives, Zelomi and Salome, and the ox with a donkey. Stories not included in the Scripture of the legends — the Apocrypha and medieval legends.

On the mosaic Cappella Palatina in Palermo, the box with the donkey look in the nursery, and Zelomi and Salome bathed baby. When Maria went into labor, Joseph went for the midwives, but it was too late: by the time they arrived, Jesus was already born. The cave was flooded with bright light. Selma visited Mary and realized that she remained a virgin, and Salome did not believe her. Beyond doubt she was punished: the midwife withered hand, and only prayer and touching the diaper to heal her. Already in the IV century, this legend has caused discontent of the Church, and yet midwives continued to portray.

The ox and the donkey to Bethlehem, Joseph took: box for sale, and the donkey Mary rode. Unlike midwives, this plot is not satisfactory: it is difficult to imagine Christmas in the barn without animals. Animals are not only reminded of the modesty and simplicity of the first days of Jesus ‘ life, as their appearance was a confirmation of the words of the prophet Isaiah: “the Ox knows his owner and the ass his master’s crib, but Israel doth not know, My people doth not consider” (ISA. 1:3).

Niccolo di Tommaso. “The vision of the Nativity of Saint Brigit”

In the center of the composition — surrounded by a Golden glow of Maria and the baby. The shepherds sitting in the distance, a silhouette of Joseph follows the outline of the roof of the cave, which emphasizes its isolation from the main scene. This is one of the first images of the Nativity of a new type, which tells not so much about the events in Bethlehem, but about the accomplishment of the miracle, about the first meeting and communion of Mary with her son. Such iconography reflected the religiosity of the late middle Ages mystical, prone to emotional experiences. The source of this story — the vision of the Swedish St. Bridget, the founder of the order brigantines, which is shown in the lower right corner of the picture.

In 1344, after the death of her husband, she withdrew from the world and devoted his life to prayer. Soon she began to visit different visions, and during a pilgrimage to the Holy land, she opened the events of Christmas night. She saw Joseph leaving the lit candle, left the cave, and Maria, removing the cloak, began to pray. At this time, in one moment the baby was born, from which came such a brilliant light that the candle flame disappears. Birgitta describes Mary, tenderly bending overlying on the cold floor as a baby. This scene is the worship of Christ will later portray many artists. Among these paintings, “the Adoration of the Magi” by Stefan Lochner (1440), “Christmas” Rogier van der Weyden (CA. 1452), “Adoration of the Christ child” by Filippino Lippi (CA. 1480).

Petrus Christus. “Christmas”

Petrus Christus divides the composition into three plans. On the first picture arch with scenes from the book of Genesis. The columns Adam and Eve bite the fruit of the tree of knowledge. In the expulsion from Paradise, labors of Adam and eve and the murder of Abel. In the last scene, no longer young Adam and eve escorted off one of his sons. This refers to either the exile of Cain in the country of nod or the story of their third son Seth. According to the apocryphal gospel of Nicodemus, written in about the V century, Seth went to heaven with the branch of the tree of knowledge to heal the aging Adam. After his father’s death he planted the branch on his grave, and millennia later, there grew a tree: and it was made the cross on which Christ was crucified. This story appears in “the Golden legend” — the most famous in the Middle ages the Christian tradition, compiled in the thirteenth century. If the latter relief is dedicated to Seth, the image in front of the Expulsion from Eden alludes to the future salvation.

The scene is actually Christmas. It is important to pay attention to two, at first sight, imperceptible detail: at the boots lying next to Joseph and beams sticking out of the branch with fresh leaves. They refer to two old Testament stories which the Middle ages saw the instructions on the immaculate conception and Christmas. First, this is the story of the rod of the high priest Aaron’s budded as proof of his right to serve God and the burning Bush — on fire but not burning Bush from which God spoke to Moses. The rod miraculously empty shoots, and untouched by fire in a Bush anticipated the virgin birth. The location of the branches directly over the baby pushes out the viewer thinking about its meaning and reminded of the shots, which gave the staff of Aaron. It also alludes to the harmony of two Latin words, Virgo (virgin) and virga (branch).

Shoes Joseph remind the viewer of Moses, who took off his shoes, approaching the Bush. In the popular illustrated Bibles, Christmas, Aaron’s rod and Moses before the burning Bush is often depicted next. The symbolism of the Christus is somewhat more complicated: most likely, he is counting on an educated and devout audience.

The long-range plan for the future — the death and resurrection of Christ. Behind the barn is visible from the city of Bruges, among the buildings stands the Church of Jerusalem, built in Bruges, in 1428. Such churches in Europe was pretty much their plan and dedication reminiscent of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem. Way tomb Christus completes his narrative.

Notes and sketches Birshtein has kept his daughter, Anna Birshtein. The work of his father it was published in a series of mini-albums, has long become a bibliographic rarity.

“I came from a hungry, scary Turkmen life. And here the circle rejoicing, raging bright abundance, open benches crammed with all sorts of fruits, they smoke the barbecue in tents, counters piled with vegetables, rice, nuts, mixed with raisins; thick sellers-Uzbeks in expensive robes, belted below the waist orange, red embroidered shawls, which are wrapped thick wads of cash on their heads — black and white pattern skullcap, and over the ear plugged lovely rose, slyly smiling eyes, and seem to have fun moving the thick black mustache. Many urban bluish-gray, gray or pink, but if a white or green means it’s Haji, a person visiting Mecca.

Girls and women sell round glossy, crispy, Golden, sprinkled some seeds, hot, crisp, such beautiful and such then unavailable, but such delicious cakes. And the sun shines brightly on a dark blue-purple sky. And finely and dry click of hooves gray hairy sweetest little donkeys, sitting on them, the important fed Uzbeks or wise white-haired elders. Paradise!

There was another way to make money, but this is later in the spring when it was warm and everything blossomed but has not yet come such a terrible heat. In small teams we “stray artists”, went on foot from Samarkand to the nearest farm, in the village. Offered to arrange a tea house: sometimes on the white wall of the village’s teahouse, we wrote a picture, such as a feat Kicker is a war hero, who broke into the German trench and killed the Germans entrenching shovel. Uzbeks click language wonder, is it really depicts the truth or is it “propaganda”. For the work we receive, or money, or in kind: bread, flour. In our team: If we draw a portrait, make sure that in ” no ” the customer does not recognize, the shadow under the nose and the cheeks are not encouraged, it is necessary to draw all the buttons, and if you have the badges, it is necessary to perform everything exactly. A great connoisseur and lover of Persian miniatures and Oriental art in General, doing these portraits is masterful”.

This program centered on the research of historic dialects such as for instance ancient Greek language Latin, and later.

The humanists’ official center wasn’t: the Innocent School at Careggi a fantasy that is later. The School wasn’t a but instead an idea of an Affiliation of like-minded interlocutors, followers, and bloggers of Plato. The position is really a public establishment it had been built-in the century. However, the Medici empire was able to completely make the most of the truth that Plato was initially used in their town — Florence was seen as the Renaissance’s social capital.

  1. Technology and miracle within the Renaissance

Often in blaming superstitions of the Ages that are a center, while the Renaissance is recognized as a period of reason’s success over bias. Nevertheless, miracle and an important part performed within the world’s Renaissance image, as well as in the fathers’ documents of the alleged “medical revolution”. The creator of Galileo horoscopes and the shaft Cardano; astronomer attempted to change astronomer Tycho Brahe, along with astrology, he was keen on Newton, in addition to alchemy. Except that Copernicus magic — was involved in his disciple Retyk that was only.

The art of the Renaissance created a genuine revolution, however, it began not Raphael, Leonardo and really a book. One of the era’s most significant creative improvements was oil-painting. Because Vasari was regarded that created it, the Dutch grasp Jan van Eyck (1390-1441). Nevertheless, this method was introduced by van Eyck to excellence that was virtuosic.

To Croatia with the acrylic from there arrived several compositional versions which we today appreciate the pictures of Carpaccio along with other renowned designers, lighting, and visual effects, a play about the luxurious acceptance of the face being an impartial style, concealed meaning.

Perspective’s regulations were initially utilized Cassie, di Simone, recognized underneath the moniker of Masaccio ever. A professional within the background of Renaissance technology miracle and viewpoint Hovhannes Hakobyan describes this Renaissance because it is precisely named what breakthroughs were produced in additional essential things, in addition to this period.

Exactly what does “Renaissance”

The word “Renaissance” often describes the interval that finished roughly within the century and started within the XIV, is anything of the link between your Western tradition of the center Fresh and Ages period. Even though the phrase has become assumed, home-period, he wasn’t. Historian and artist Giorgio Vasari in “Lifestyles of the very renowned artists, sculptors and designers” (1550) the word Trina scita (actually “revival”) compared a brand new artwork, originating from Giotto to Brunelleschi, Alberti, Leonardo, Raphael, Michelangelo along with other experts of the “crude” gothic-style. He’s not a go back to vintage resources, and a development. However it is Petrarch who’s typically regarded the very first Renaissance author, was asked to restore most significantly, and the historic Cannon — to cleanse the vocabulary in the levels of the dark ages that are crude. It’s easy to understand that two of the writers “Renaissance” imply things that are fundamentally various.

Following the book of Micheletti’s “Background of Portugal within the century: Renaissance”, within the – century, historians started initially to call in the method that was German the whole interval in the century. Progressively the “Renaissance” or “revival”, started initially to be properly used more extensively, talking about any curiosity about resuming the understanding that was lost. For instance, the thriving of literature, theology, regulation along with other understanding under Charlemagne and his descendants (VIII–IX millennium) is usually referred to as the Carolingian Renaissance and also the Renaissance of the XII century named the increase of technology, viewpoint and composition in Europe, linked to the interpretation into Latin of numerous formerly unfamiliar scrolls — not just from Traditional but from Arabic.

Some contemporary historians genuinely believe that the epoch from Petrarch towards the XVII century more truthful to contact the first contemporary ages (early modern interval). First, the word includes the facts which have impacted all sections of the populace (the low course is improbable to possess read Traditional writers, or analyzed historic new purchases). Next, the center Ages like a momentary drop within the darkness’ thought, after which it the lighting of traditional tradition again shown, is becoming obsolete. Nevertheless, the word ” contemporary interval that was early ” pressed “the Renaissance”. This’ proof is, for instance, America — Affiliation, including about four-thousand professionals in tradition, background, technology, Renaissance, doing an annual meeting with countless participants’ society. It’s secure to determine the related two conditions: one describes the financial and sociable history.

When was the Renaissance

Precisely show the era’s limitations; the discussion about that being seldom total and the years. When Petrarch was topped having a wreath to get a minimal starting place frequently take. In antiquity, the wreath was designed to the winner of the composition competition, but out-of-competition Petrarch was in the fourteenth-century: he was truly thought to be the undeniable winner made to restore the real Latin. 1341 the entire year day is significantly more than traditional, however in technology, there’s an opinion the Renaissance started in Croatia of the century, and primary center and its own first was Florence. Once the finish — the query is much more questionable. The final day, particularly, sticks towards the writer of “the World of the Renaissance” Jean Deluna, with it, possibly we are able to concur: the signing of the serenity of Westphalia designated a fundamentally new phase within the background of the Western Claims. A rigid structure has been misplaced by worldwide relationships: Dukes, electors, kings and landgraves of Europe stopped to become emperors of the Sacred Roman Kingdom Lord- overlords that were provided. Began and founded the thought of Claims that is sovereign and noninterference within their inner Matters, a demonstration clearly was on strict patience. A brand new period was intended by the brand new guidelines.

The Renaissance and the dark ages

Based on common perception, the Renaissance declined ancient superstition in support of technology and switched to a guy in the place of God. It’s regarded that very first thing within the rebirth of the scholasticism that was forgotten, that’s, rigid philosophical evidence for that lifestyle of God’s machine which it’s started the very first colleges. Scholasticism was among the best accomplishments of Western mental tradition, although today this word is nearly a filthy term. It had been she who trained a Western guy to consider realistically; the documents of Aristotle, who within the twelfth-century delivered towards the medical revolution within the translation performed a substantial part of this procedure.

If scholasticism was based Renaissance viewpoint, on Aristotle, the foundation was built by additional historic writers — Plato. the Marsilio Ficino initial translates into Latin their works. It had been an excellent Western feeling within the late century nearly nobody understood retrieved and the words were regarded as misplaced in fragmentary quotes.

Still life in a fish shop

Fish still life — an allegory of water. This kind of works as a butcher shop was often part of the so-called cycle and, as a rule, created to adorn a Palace dining rooms. In the foreground of the painting, Frans Snyders

“Fish shop” depicts the multitude of fishes. There are perch and sturgeon, carp, catfish, salmon and other seafood. The part is split, part is waiting. These images of fish have no subtext — they sing the wealth of Flanders.

With the boy, we see the gift basket that he received on the Day of St. Nicholas. This point is tied to the wooden basket the red shoes. Apart from sweets, fruit and nuts in the basket are the rods — like a hint of education “carrot and stick”. The contents of the basket tell about the joys and sorrows of human life, which constantly replace each other. The woman explains to the child that obedient children get presents, while bad is punished. The boy recoiled in horror: he thought that instead of sweets will receive strokes of the cane. On the right, we see the window opening where you can see the town square. A group of kids standing under the Windows and joyfully welcomed the puppet jester on the balcony. Jester — an essential attribute of people’s festive celebrations.

In numerous variations of serving tables in the paintings of Dutch masters, we see bread and cakes, nuts and lemons, hams and sausages, lobster and crayfish dishes with oysters, fish or empty shells. To understand these still lifes can be depending on set items.

In a painting by Gerrit Willems Kheda we see the dish, jug, tall glass, the glass and the overturned vase, go Eichner, ham, crumpled napkin, and a lemon. It is a traditional and favorite set of Kheda. The location of objects and their choice is not accidental. Silverware symbolizes the wealth of the earth and their desperate, ham — pleasures of the flesh, attractive appearance and acidic inside the lemon represents a betrayal. Extinguished candle indicates the frailty and transience of human existence, the mess on the table — for the destruction. High glass-“flute” (in the XVII century, such glasses were used as measuring container labels) fragile as a human life, and at the same time symbolizes moderation and a person’s ability to control their impulses. Overall, the still life, as in many other “Breakfast”, with items play on the theme of the vanity of vanities and meaninglessness of earthly delights.

Most of the depicted items on the still life Peter are erotic symbols. Oysters, tube, wine refer to brief and dubious carnal pleasures. But this is only one variant reading of still life. Look at these images from a different angle. So, shells are symbols of the frailty of the flesh; the tube, which not only Smoking but also blew soap bubbles — a symbol of the suddenness of death.

The theme of the transience of human existence is contrasted with the immortality of the soul, and the signs of frailty are suddenly symbols of salvation. Bread and a glass of wine in the background associated with the body and blood of Jesus and point to the sacrament. Herring is another symbol of Christ — like about fasting and Lenten food. Open and shell oysters can change their negative value to the opposite, labeling the human soul, separated from the body and ready to enter into eternal life.

Different levels of interpretation of the items subtly tell the viewer that people are always free to choose between the spiritual and the eternal and transitory earth.

Vanitas, or “Scientist” still life

The genre of so-called “scientist” still life received the name of vanitas in Latin, it means “vanity of vanities” — in other words, “memento mori” (“remember death”). This is the most intelligent form of still-life, allegory of eternity, of art, of the transitoriness of earthly glory and human life.

The hunting horn symbolizes the riches that are impossible to bring into the next life. In “scientists” still lifes often find images of open books or papers lying carelessly with inscriptions. Not only do they offer to reflect about the depicted objects, but also allow you to use them for the purpose: to read the open pages, or to execute written in the music book music. Van Strek depicted in the sketch of the head of a boy and a book: it is a tragedy of Sophocles “Electra”, translated into Dutch. These images indicate that art is eternal. But the pages of the book are bent and dented. This signs of the onset of damage, implying that after death even the art is not useful. The inevitability of death and says the skull, but wrapped around his ear bread symbolizes the hope of the resurrection and eternal life. By the middle of XVII century the skull wrapped bread or ear of the evergreen ivy will become a compulsory subject for the image in the still lifes in the vanitas style.
